Travelogue Pt. 11

The Travelogue series recounts a seventeen-day-long cross-country road trip I took at age 21 with two college friends. We started in Charlotte, NC, and ended up two weeks and 8,000 miles later in Los Angeles, CA. The following is taken verbatim from a handwritten journal I laboriously kept on the trip. Names have been changed, but the rest is absolute, 100%, unedited truth.

June 15

In Folsom. Or actually Orange Vale, CA.

Forgot my journal for a couple of days but will try to catch up.

Woke in Seattle. Took ferry from Bremerton, abt 20min drive. Caught the 8:45. It was phenomenal. Overcast day, but we stood on the bow for the last 20min and had a ridiculous view of the Seattle skyline. It was grey sky on grey city on grey water and it was just so sleepy but happy. The inside of the boat wasn’t like what I imagined. It was a giant tan cafeteria and everyone was sleeping and putting on makeup and reading etc. Felt like Meredith Grey. Got let off in the shopping district.

Quickly found a Top Pot Coffee and Doughnuts. Got a small drip coffee and split a raspberry doughnut with Jess. It was okay. Store was set up like a 2 story library though so that was cool.

Walked to the Space Needle. Too expensive to go up, but cool to see it. Not as impressively tall as I’d hoped. Weirdos around there. Spiderman and Darth Vader people. Lots of homeless and beggars. Really cool giant metal flowers hooked up to sensors so they played different musical notes as you walked by them.

Then went to Pike Place. Unreal. So many people but exactly what I had hoped. Mazes of vendors and shops in labyrinthine layouts. Free samples out the wazoo. Olive oil, chocolate pasta, pesto, cheese, caramels. Went to the original Starbucks. Some people ordered drinks but I just got a mug for Kelly. Glad I went but nothing special. Cool to think of a multinational chain starting out as just another stall at Pike Place though. Saw fish get tossed.

Went to Japonessa for lunch, which Alyssa and Anthony had recommended. So delicious. Tempura shrimp rolls, salmon rolls, and crab rolls, of course all spicy. Used chopsticks. So good. Lots of “fabulous” gays but not really flamboyant.

Got some tea at a less crowded Starbs. Went to Patagonia so Samantha could shop. Went to Edgewater Hotel which has a lobby that overhangs the water. Precious little British boy yelling at the seagulls.

Took 5:35 ferry back. Samantha and Jessica fell asleep. I people watched.

Went to Slaughter County Brewery for dinner. Split pizza.

Had difficulty finding a grocery store afterwards because they all are different from VA and NC. Albertson’s was the one we found thanks to a kind employee at Goodwill. Got ice cream and a Redbox. Came back and talked about our day with William, Alyssa, and Anthony. Had Shaklee, let Anthony try. Fell asleep watching the movie, The Longest Week. It was below average. Cool style but very shallow.
