Travelogue Pt. 3

The Travelogue series recounts a seventeen-day-long cross-country road trip I took at age 21 with two college friends. We started in Charlotte, NC, and ended up two weeks and 8,000 miles later in Los Angeles, CA. The following is taken verbatim from a handwritten journal I laboriously kept on the trip. Names have been changed, but the rest is absolute, 100%, unedited truth.

June 4

Still in St. Louis. Just got back from breakfast. Mom hooked us up so we ate like fools. Omelets, muffins, fruit, cereal, doughnuts, coffee, juice, potatoes, bagels, you name it. Moods seem to be better but I’m pretty tired. Didn’t sleep great. Got checkout moved to 1:30!

Currently in Lawrence, KS.

After breakfast we went to the City Museum in St. Louis. Hands down one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. It’s very difficult to explain, but it’s essentially an “adult-sized” ten story jungle gym. We got there around 9:30. It was $12. The first floor was pretty much metal tunnels and we all busted our knees doing that so very quickly moved on to the caves which were dark, “rocky” tunnels. A few times we ended up having to totally turn around because the tunnels were just too narrow. But you can climb on basically anything you can see. There was a tree/wood section, an aquarium, a little train we weaseled our way onto even though it had a height limit of about 3′, a skateboard style room with rope swings, an outdoor section, and just a million little cool places to get lost. Oh and a 10-story slide. All in all def one of my favorite things ever.

Then we went back to the hotel and headed out. We wanted a Welcome to Missouri sign so made a loop on the sweet St. Louis bridge to get a shot.

It was pretty much a straight shot to KC, and we got there around 5.

Went to Joe’s BBQ for dinner which is supposedly famous. SO GOOD. It’s literally a gas station but was packed.

Went after to Country Club Plaza, a super cute Spanish-style part of town with a nice park. Lots of restaurants and shopping.

We wanted to see the more city part of the city so just drove through for a while. Sam loved it. It was honestly just a city to me. Some cool topography but nothing crazy.

Went to Lawrence for ice cream about a 1/2 hour out of the city. Got Maddy’s Mud from Sylas and Maddy’s. Lawrence is where Univ of Kansas is. Def a college town feel. We finally felt like we fit in again.

Met Emily, Joshua’s cousin, at a local brewery called Free State. Got an oatmeal stout. She’s an interesting girl. Getting Master’s and PhD from Kansas, but not originally from here. Talked to Sam forever about biochem. She’s nice, a little awk. But her place suggestions (Joe’s, Plaza, Sylas, Free State) were all perf. Got a little lost getting to her apt but found it. One bedroom. Def college apt. Awk bathroom situation. The only one is in her bedroom. But nice big living room for us to sleep in. Talked to her for a while while we got ready for bed, so it’s a little later than I’d hoped. She’s nice and conversational though.

Mostly I’m just having trouble being around Samantha nonstop. It’s wearing on me for sure. Moments are great, but more are rough. But I’m doing fairly well at separating the sights from my emotions.
