A Wrinkle in Time book cover

I’m a little biased on this one: A Wrinkle in Time is one of my all-time favorites.

I read it as a child and didn’t really understand it, so I threw it in the back of my bookshelf and forgot about it until I found a reprint of the series that someone gave me. It’s beautiful and so fun, so I reread it.

And loved it.

So I reread it again. And again. And again.

I’m not sure how many times I’ve read it, but it’s a lot.

This time I read it, my eyes were a little more attuned to a feminist reading. How cool is it that the main character – Meg – is a female who is good at science and has to explore in space? Sure, there’s lots of issues there too (she’s portrayed as the weakest one physically, she is incredibly emotional, she has to have things explained to her by men) but still. Also, Meg’s mom Mrs. Murry is one of the coolest characters around.

I don’t have much to say about this book except that everyone should read it. It’s obviously meant for a younger audience, but everyone can get something out of this gem. My favorite character is Mrs. Who, because she’s constantly quoting really impressive pieces of literature. So don’t worry if you’re not a science nerd – there’s something for everyone.

I’ve looked it up before, and L’Engle is a Christian, an Episcopalian to be exact, though a very controversial one at that. Christianity is everywhere in this scientific book, mostly as a universal, unifying goodness, and as a giant metaphor in the whole book, but if that’s not your thing, you should read it anyways.

Read it. Everybody.
